Norman Mineta is a former American politician who served in various government positions, including as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives and as a cabinet member in two presidential administrations. He was born on November 12, 1931, in San Jose, California, and grew up in a Japanese American family.
Mineta served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War before beginning his political career. He was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1974, where he represented California’s 13th congressional district for 20 years. During his time in Congress, Mineta was known for his work on transportation and civil rights issues.
In 1993, President Bill Clinton appointed Mineta as Secretary of Commerce, making him the first Asian American to hold a cabinet-level position. He served in that role until 2000, when he resigned to become CEO of a technology company.
After the September 11 terrorist attacks in 2001, President George W. Bush appointed Mineta as Secretary of Transportation, a position he held until 2006. During his time in that role, Mineta played a key role in implementing new security measures for air travel.
